content

This is my content page, as you can see the house style is the same and colours. I have on the top used the same magazine front title from the front cover to use in my contents page. I have clearly put also on the top the issue number and date so the reader knows what issue they are reading. Along the left side, there is a band index I have used this idea from NME as they have a band index in there contents page, I feel that this gives the contents page a good feel to it. It is easier to find your favorite band in the magazine with this band index.

I have also followed the conventional contents page by categorising the different pages and also writing a little bit about what will be in the page, so the reader knows before they get to the page to expect. I have also used the black blocks in the contents page as I have used in my double page spread and front page.

The image of 'Savage' is in black and white to make the feel of a rock image, I really like this image as it shows the attitude of the artist and also that he is looking at the camera with a grumpy look on his face showing the attitude that I wanted to get across.

I am all in all very happy in how this content page has come out, I feel that everything about this page works, and looks at its best.

My dps

As you can see I have kept the house style the same through-out the whole of the magazine, the red, black and white colouring has been followed throughout each page. I have also kept the black blocks the same in each page, with red and white writing over the top. I feel that this gives the page an extra edge and it also helps the writing to stand out of the page. You can clearly see now where to read, I have also asked relevant questions within the interview, asking the band questions like; 'what is it like to be called the hottest indie band?' I have also answered the question as if a real life band would answer.

The image again is the same band 'Blame' as on the front page, I have used the same band because it also shows that this double-page spread is inside the magazine. Looking at the band in this image they again look like a real life indie/rock band that you would see in NME or Kerrang. I like the image as again the band are looking directly at the camera showing that they are talking directly at the audience, as if they were speaking what they were saying what they said in the interview to you in real life. With their arms crossed you can tell that they have an attitude, which most rock bands have.

I have used a plectrum/pick in the top left hand corner of the page to underline the introduction to the double-page spread, I have done this because rock bands also play guitars and they have to use a plectrum to play a guitar, I feel that this is very effective because it has a meaning to why I am using it. I feel that it also makes the introduction stand out within the first page.

The band name 'Blame' is in the top corner, I have used a different font to the rest as I feel that it gives the page a rocky look about it. I really like the way in which the font stands out. The title is in massive font showing that this double page spread is all about this band and nothing else.

I am very happy on how this double page spread has came out. I feel that it looks very professional and how the colour schemes and house style has been carried out through out the pages.

My Magazine evaluation

This is my Front page of my final piece magazine, as you can see it is different to my last front page, this is because I felt that the last front page didn't look professional. I feel that now this page has a better look to it. I chose this image as I felt that like last year it was one of the best images that I took, I feel that the image was a good solid image that all of the band are looking directly at the camera. This has a direct mode of address, showing that they want the consumers to buy the magazine. I have also changed the images colour around making the image look like a smokey colour, I feel that this colour is good for the magazine as it gives an edge to the magazine, it also makes the image look kind of old but rocky. I also like the way in which I chose the black coats they really stand out in the image as there is a lot of black within the image. The band look like an actually band which also helps the magazine look real.

Looking at the title I am very happy with the boldness of the title it is plain and simple just like the NME title. I have mounted the title on a white background to make the title stand out even more, The title I feel it stands out further than the main image itself. Above the title is the websire address, using a black background and red writing so that people can see it clearly and go on the website to find out more above the magazine.

I have used 'buzz' words like 'Win' and 'Free' to attract the readers to buy the magazine for the free items inside. E.g 'Win- a copy of savage's new album' this attracts the audience if they are a fan of 'Savage' they will buy the magazine to get the win the free album. I've used phrases within the puff, like 'not to be missed' to make the reader read my articles inside.

The centre quote "music makes music happen" is the center piece of the magazine, I have also put the page number of the article underneath so people think it would be a good read if it is on the front page.

The barcode is clear with the price just above it with the issue number and date as well clearly in red, so the audience know what issue they are reading and what price it is. I feel that the price of £3.50 is very reasonable for the magazine, it is a high gloss magazine which will get people to buy it. The look of the maagzine is also a good insentive for people to pay this reasonable price.

The underlining of the magazine, with 'Free poster special' makes people buy the magazine for the free posters, also with some of the bands names as well on this outline, also shows the reader who is in the magazine when they buy it.

I feel that this magazine front cover looks like a real life magazine which could be bought in the shops along side some of the best sellers.

Practise Final Piece

For my final still media production I choice to make a music magazine. The genre of music that I decided to make my magazine for was Indie/Rock. My magazine was entitled 'Total'. I choose to make a music magazine over the choice of a moving image piece, as i felt more comfortable making a magazine using Photoshop than using a video camera to make the short film.

I looked at many different styles of magazines to find a style that I myself would like to focus my magazine on. I looked for influences from NME and Q magazine, I also looked at Kerrang, but NME & Q were my two that I looked more depth into their house style. I preferred the house style of NME to Q as I felt that it was carried out thorough throughout the magazine with the colouring, using mostly reds, blacks and whites. Then i preferred the photography and how the articles are expressed, using a more formal tone in the way they are written. These two magazines are simlar in what type of music they focus on, they both look at the Indie/Rock genre; which myself I wanted to focus my magazine on. I really wanted to make my photos as crisp as they are in Q. I wanted to make to make my images as professional as they look in Q magazine. That is why I used photoshop to make the images are clear as possible. I have tried to use the same codes and conventions as they use in NME and Q in using symbolic codes using the main image on the front cover using the boys looking straight at the camera, using a mid-shot from the waist up, this is a symbolic code as it is a direct address of them talking and looking at the reader so they buy the magazine. All of my images I have captured are of a artist looking direct to the camera this makes the reader feel like they are looking in direct to the artist/band. The band 'blame' I feel look like a read band. I have tried to make them look like the band 'The Enemy' following the iconic black jackets. I have put my band in black jackets to look like a real indie band like 'The Enemy'.

I wasn't happy on how these came out, I am happy on how the colours and house style of these different parts of the magazine. The magazine pages all look like the same magazine which is the best thing. I am unhappy on how unprofessional it looks. I feel that there is too much white in each page. I feel that also there are a lot of things lacking in each page which I can correct next time. I want to keep the layouts the same and the colours, but I want to change most of the backgrounds. I also really don't like the writing on the front page, I feel that it looks to fake and scrappy. I want to change this on my real magazine as I feel that it will give my magazine a real cutting edge to it. I also want to keep the photographs the same as I really like there professional look to them.

Layouts:

These are all my layouts for my final piece, I have made these so I can follow the same house style when making my actually final piece. I will follow them as clearly as I can, so mine and Joe Edwards would look like they belong to the same magazine.

Powerpoint on magazines

This is a powerpoint on my research on all the different magazines that can be bought on the market and why people buy them. I have also researched my audience for my own magazine and the social group that they belong in. This is relevant to the magazine genre as there needs to be a specific age range that you are selling your magazine to and for. As you can see through my powerpoint that my social group is B-C1 and middle to lower class, this is due to the price range of the magazine and also the wording inside. I have chosen this age as I feel that there isn't a magazine like mine in the market today that the public can have a high class glossy magazine at a reasonable price like this.

Magazine That I Have Looked At:

The magazines that I have used as a guide line for my magazine, is NME and Q. I have decided to use these magazine as they are of the indie/rock genre. I also like the layout of both of these magazine and the images that they have inside. I find that the pictures that Q has inside they are well taken and crisp. My favorite image is the lily Allen standing next to panthers. I really like the way that the images are taken for Q, but not so much for NME.
  • I am also interested in the contents page for NME, the 'band index' is very useful and can help the reader find the artist or band they are looking to read up. The layout of the contents page for NME is much clearer than the one in Q, it is helpfully laid out so you can find edactly what it is that you want to read. Even though both of the magazines are pretty much the same in the genre that they both are writing about, i like the style that Q words their magazine. It is more formal than NME as Q is ranged for a more up marketed audience. Both front pages for these magazine are very iconical and easily noticeable for the reader to pick up. I would like to accomplish this with my own magazine.
